Humanism is a non-religious worldview describing how we can flourish as individuals and communities through compassionate action guided by reason.
Humanists believe that this life is the only life we have and make sense of the world through logic, reason, and evidence. Humanists place welfare and happiness at the center of their ethical decision-making.
From the American Humanist Association’s “Humanism and its Aspirations” page:
- Knowledge of the world is derived by observation, experimentation, and rational analysis
- Humans are an integral part of nature, the result of unguided evolutionary change
- Ethical values are derived from human need and interest as tested by experience
- Life’s fulfillment emerges from individual participation in the service of humane ideals
- Humans are social by nature and find meaning in relationships
- Working to benefit society maximizes individual happiness
